Swiss Cell Phone Findings Troubling for Children’s Health Although parents are likely feeling reassured by the first media headlines about a new Swiss study of brain tumor risk in children using cell phones, the findings are actually quite troubling, according to a review by Environmental Working Group. The recently published CEFALO research is a retrospective case-control study that analyzed cell phone use as a potential risk factor among children and adolescents who were diagnosed with brain tumors. The study included 352 patients ages 7-to-19 in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland. Only 5 percent of the children and teenagers in the study had used cell phones for longer than 5 years. When results for all durations of cell phone use were pooled together, researchers did not see a statistically significant elevation of brain tumor risk. However, this broad aggregation of the results masks important signals in the underlying data.

The findings for the 2011 2nd Quarter BNI Business Index are in and they continue to look promising. Over 1,700 people responded to this survey and for the third quarter in a row, we see a rise in the index relating to how business is doing today compared to a year ago. According to the survey, 70.4% of the respondents believe that business is growing (58.1%) or growing substantially (12.3%) compared to this time last year.

A hearing is set for Monday before an administrative judge in the Orlando suburb of Sanford. SeaWorld is expected to argue that three safety citations issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration after an investigation into trainer Dawn Brancheau’s death last year are unfounded. The amusement park says the allegations are baseless and unsupported by the evidence.

(AP) The Environmental Protection Agency has issued its findings from inspections of dairy operations in the Shenandoah Valley. Story 0 Comments Font Size: September 4, 2011 The Environmental Protection Agency has issued its findings from inspections of dairy operations in the Shenandoah Valley. The inspections in May were part of the massive, multistate effort to restore the Chesapeake Bay. According to the Daily News-Record of Harrisonburg, the EPA pointed to livestock that had unrestricted access to streams and pasture areas that lack vegetation, each of which contribute to the bay’s pollution. The inspections involved two farms in Harrisonburg, two in Dayton and one each in Bridgewater, Broadway and McGaheysville. Incidental Findings in Imaging Research: Evaluating Incidence, Benefit, and Burden [Original Investigation]
Background Little information exists concerning the frequency and medical significance of incidental findings (IFs) in imaging research. Methods Medical records of research participants undergoing a research imaging examination interpreted by a radiologist during January through March 2004 were reviewed, with 3-year clinical follow-up. An expert panel reviewed all IFs generating clinical action to determine medical benefit/burden on the basis of predefined criteria. The frequency of IFs that generated further clinical action was estimated by modality, body part, age, and sex, along with net medical benefit or burden.

December 27, 2010 Dinner Table Science: My 3 Favorite Findings of 2010 Last year, at Christmas dinner with my husband’s family, I was stumped by a seemingly simple question: “What was the biggest scientific discovery of 2009?” What a great question, I remember thinking, as the papers and news I’d read over the past year churned through my mind, struggling to bubble up to consciousness. For a biology graduate student, it should have been easy; I should have been able to come up with something, anything, that was a notable scientific achievement, yet also engaging enough to be of interest to my in-laws. (The overlap between these two spheres of science is smaller than you might think. In fact, as I tried in vain to pull an answer from the murky depths of my memory, I was beginning to believe it was non-existent.) I fumbled for a long minute, and exchanged a blank glance with my husband (who was also a grad student) – he too was at a loss.
